The last few months at Can You, Bulgaria
The last few months at Can You, Bulgaria
It has been a pleasure for Can You to host such amazing volunteers from all over Europe over the last few months, and we are equally pleased to hear their kind words about their experiences. Our volunteers from Georgia, who led a variety of training workshops for international participants, highlighted the unique opportunity to meet people from all over the world. They loved that they were able to get to know other people and cultures, for example through our international evening, at the same time as experiencing the richness of Bulgarian culture. Not only has this broadened everyone’s horizons, it enabled our volunteers to develop their interpersonal communication skills – for example, Eva said “During my stay in Bulgaria I met people of different nationalities, it was a really amazing feeling, and we soon became friends and exchanged the cultures of our countries.” Similarly, Iveri highlighted that “I learned how to communicate with people from different countries, how to conduct a workshop in English and most importantly, I met people with whom I will definitely continue the relationship.” It is fantastic to see how these volunteers have blossomed during their time with us and the impact that Bulgaria has had on their life outlook and attitudes.
We also hosted several volunteers for the International Folklore Festival Vitosha, an international dance competition and celebration held at the National Palace of Culture, Sofia. With participants from Ukraine, Spain and the United Kingdom working with Bulgarian volunteers, this opportunity was a brilliant way for these young people to develop their communication skills, confidence and cultural awareness. Yehor from Ukraine especially highlighted how the cooperation with Bulgarian volunteers enhanced his understanding of intercultural diversity, and how leading a walking tour of Sofia with the festival participants was a great opportunity to meet and communicate with people from all over the world. This sentiment was echoed by Sara and Sergio, our Spanish volunteers, and we are honored that Sara said “Being able to work with Can You prior to and during the Vitosha International Folklore Festival has been a life-changing experience for me, as it has given me the opportunity to get to know different cultures and meet a lot of new people that nowadays I consider my friends.” Naomi from the UK also told us about the joy of meeting new friends and witnessing the richness of Bulgarian and international folk culture, and affirmed that “constantly meeting people from around the world and trying new experiences is the best thing about being in this wonderful country – I am already excited to return!”. Hearing that this experience has been life changing for our volunteers, infusing them with a love of dance and intercultural exchange, is the most fulfilling thing we can hear as an organisation.
